Causes of Heart Disease

We all know that these are causes of heart disease:
• Hypertension (high blood pressure)
• Tobacco use
• Raised blood glucose (diabetes)
• Physical inactivity
• Unhealthy diet
• Cholesterol/lipids
• Overweight and obesity
• Metabolic syndrome
• Mental stress and depression
• Pregnancy complications such as high blood pressure or diabetes during pregnancy
But here are some interesting facts related to women with cancer and heart disease provided by the Mayo Clinic:
• Chemotherapy side effects may increase the risk of heart disease, including weakening of the heart muscle (cardiomyopathy) and rhythm disturbances (arrhythmias). Certain types of chemotherapy also may increase the risk of heart attack.
• Some anti-cancer treatments may cause temporary heart damage by weakening the heart muscle.

Cancer Treatments and Heart Damage

These treatments include: A class of drugs known as anthracyclines (doxorubicin, daunorubicin, others) and newer medications, such as trastuzumab (Herceptin) and pertuzumab (Perjeta), which are drugs designed to attack the HER2 protein seen in some breast and other cancers
The sad reality of heart disease is that it can affect any woman under almost any circumstance. If you look at the list of causes above, then you will note that each can also be cancer contributors. To keep your heart healthy is to keep your body healthy to best of its ability. If you’re a woman who has had cancer, talk to your oncologist about the medications and therapies you’ve received that can potentially damage your heart.
On February 5, National Wear Red Day, the color red was worn in solidarity with other women who are fighting this war against heart disease as well as commemorating those of us who’ve survived, and memorializing those of us who did not. Why? Life is why. #lifeiswhy
