Summer Solstice

The Summer Solstice (standing of the sun), beginning on June 21, is celebrated by many individuals and cultures today.  It’s the longest day of the year and the official beginning of Summer. For some cultures and individuals it may last for four days and for others two weeks. It is a time of renewal, for meditation and reflection; for what lies ahead in your life by setting your intention; what’s your life’s purpose.

In ancient times, people were connected and depended on rotation of the sun, stars, on the universe and nature. Ancient civilizations built large structures to honor and worship the sun. I have been fortunate enough to visit some of these structures, such as Machu Picchu in Peru, Abu Simbel in Egypt, and Chichen Itza, Mexico, to mention a few.

Rituals

To begin the process of renewing body , mind and spirit you may want to wear your favorite summer color or simply wear white during this time. Meditate by focusing on the breath to bring your awareness to your inner self. When your mind drifts to another thought, simply go back to focusing on the breath. Chanting and prayer can serve as a method of meditation to bring your awareness to your higher self.

This is an excellent time to engage in an easy, restorative exercise such as yoga, QiGong or walking meditation. Spend time alone and be open to what shows up for you in the quietness of the moment. Time out doors in the sunlight or a walk near a body of water can renew body, mind and spirit. Music can change the flow of energy in the body and have an overall healing effect.

Since food is energy, eat light meals or fast in some manner that is appealing to you. Now is a good time to start eating foods which have been nurtured and bathe by the sun.  Eat fruits, leafy green vegetables and salads. Include fresh water in your diet. Make your place settings appealing to the eye and then eat mindfully. Totally focused on what you are eating, savoring every small bite.

Human Being

As you set your intention for the remainder of the year – by becoming mindful, chanting, meditating, fasting or eating light meals – the process is enhanced by including a news and social media fast. Limit the amount of negative energy coming into your space, invading your inner well-being. The Summer Solstice period is not about ‘doing’ but rather about ‘being’.
